Legal Y-Chromosome DNA testing

Y-Chromosome DNA testing is one of the best ways to use modern science to prove the biological relationship between a son and his father. This test is very effective to prove the biological relationship between two males.

But why only males?

Well, the Court Admissible DNA testing for paternity only tests males because of the presence of the Y chromosome. The y chromosome we are talking about is usually inherited by a son from his father. The process of this phenomenon barely causes any changes in the y chromosome. This means it is practically passed down without any changes from grandfather to father to son and so on.

Females on the other hand do not possess this chromosome. They get X chromosomes, which means they do not meet the criteria to perform Y-Chromosome DNA testing.

Are there any drawbacks to this test?

Yes, the minor inconvenience that comes with this testing is that it does not tells with precision the relationship between two males. It can only detect the common Y-STR marker which is present in the paternal lineage. Hence it can only tell if the two males possess this marker or not.

Apart from that bit it is very helpful and has saved many people from an alleged relationship. Also including the fraudful tactics of people to get security benefits etc.

Court Admissible DNA testing needs the presence of all the people important for the sample and the DNA test. Legal DNA testing is very different from regular ones as it also requires the supervision of a third-party authority appointed by the court.
